Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), urging global leaders to adopt “proactive rather than provocative” leadership for peace and stability in South Asia.
Recalling the May 2025 escalation between India and Pakistan, PM Shehbaz said New Delhi’s unprovoked aggression was met with a decisive response by Pakistan’s armed forces under Field Marshal Asim Munir. He highlighted Pakistan’s resilience, noting that despite civilian losses, the nation stood firm and forced a ceasefire with U.S. mediation. PM Shehbaz credited President Donald Trump’s diplomatic intervention for preventing a catastrophic war, calling it a step towards peace.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on dialogue and diplomacy, stating: “We believe in peaceful settlement of disputes.” He also emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering support for the people of Kashmir, stressing that their right to self-determination must be ensured under the UN Charter.
Addressing global concerns, PM Shehbaz condemned Israel’s aggression in Gaza, calling it “one of the darkest chapters in history.” He expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and reiterated Pakistan’s demand for a sovereign Palestinian state with pre-1967 borders and Jerusalem as its capital.
On counter-terrorism, the premier reminded the world of Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism, while urging Afghanistan’s interim government to prevent its soil from being used by extremist groups. He also raised the growing dangers of Islamophobia, especially Hindutva-driven extremism in India, welcoming the UN’s appointment of a special envoy to combat the menace.
Highlighting the climate crisis, PM Shehbaz recalled Pakistan’s devastating floods in 2022 and 2025, stressing that despite contributing less than 1% to global emissions, Pakistan bears the brunt of climate change. He rejected the idea of tackling the crisis through loans, advocating instead for fair global action.
The Prime Minister concluded his speech with a call for unity and justice: “Pakistan will always stand for peace, justice, and development, striving for a revitalised UN and cooperative multilateralism.”
