Dar to Visit Jeddah as Israel Escalates Gaza Offensive Amid Declared Famine
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar is set to visit Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 25 to 26 to attend an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM). The session aims to discuss Israel’s intensified aggression in Gaza, its controversial plan to extend full military control over the region, and the deepening humanitarian crisis.
According to the Foreign Office, Mr. Dar will strongly reject Israel’s “outrageous” occupation plans while reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He is expected to call for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied territories, urgent humanitarian aid access, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Israel Intensifies Strikes in Gaza City
Israeli airstrikes and tank fire have devastated the eastern and northern outskirts of Gaza City, including Zeitoun, Shejaia, Sabra, and Jabalia. Witnesses reported non-stop explosions overnight, forcing thousands of families to flee, while others chose to remain in their homes despite fears of an all-out invasion.
Israel’s military confirmed its re-entry into Jabalia to “strengthen control” and expand combat operations, raising alarm among humanitarian groups and regional leaders.
Growing Concerns Over Famine in Gaza
The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with famine officially declared in Gaza City and its surrounding areas. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, 289 Palestinians, including 115 children, have died from malnutrition and starvation. Around half of Gaza’s two million residents are currently displaced or at risk.
A global hunger monitor has warned that famine is likely to spread rapidly if humanitarian aid remains blocked.
OIC’s Role in Addressing the Crisis
The extraordinary OIC-CFM meeting is expected to push for:
- A unified stance against Israeli military escalation
- Increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza
- Renewed efforts toward a permanent ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal
Dar’s visit underscores Pakistan’s commitment to defending Palestinian rights and seeking international action against ongoing atrocities.
