RAWALPINDI: A shocking incident unfolded outside Adiala Jail on Friday when Aleema Khanum, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, was attacked with an egg during a media talk. The incident quickly went viral, with videos circulating across social media and major news channels, sparking widespread condemnation from political leaders and the public alike.
According to Rawalpindi Police, two women were arrested for carrying out the act. Authorities revealed that the suspects were PTI supporters who had joined members of the All Government Employees Grand Alliance and the All Pakistan Clerks Association in Rawalpindi to press their demands. Police stated that the egg was thrown after Aleema Khan refused to answer their questions.
After the attack, the two women attempted to flee in their car but were intercepted by PTI supporters. Some members of the crowd reportedly threw stones at the vehicle, breaking its windscreen. The police later confirmed that the suspects were taken into custody at the Adiala checkpoint.
The PTI leadership termed the incident a “shameful attack” on Aleema Khan and claimed that the suspects were facilitated by police to escape. The party further alleged that the act was part of a “planned agenda” against its leadership.
Prominent political figures from across the spectrum condemned the act. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized PTI for its own past political misconduct but acknowledged that such attacks were beyond civility. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal called for politics to remain a “contest of ideas, not hatred.” Similarly, Akhtar Mengal, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Sharjeel Memon, and others strongly denounced the targeting of women in politics, calling it “a vile and unacceptable act.”
Aleema Khan has been actively campaigning for her brother’s release since August 2024. Imran Khan, who has been in prison since August 2023, is serving a sentence in the £190 million corruption case and faces multiple trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
This is not the first time such acts have been planned against PTI leadership. Back in 2014, a plot to attack Imran Khan with rotten eggs and tomatoes was foiled in Gujranwala.
