The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide alert for a fresh spell of widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms, expected to intensify from August 17, 2025. This active monsoon system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), Kashmir, Balochistan, and Sindh.
⚠️ Areas Under High Risk
According to the PMD, the heaviest downpours are expected in Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Peshawar, Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Mardan. Coastal and interior Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana, will also experience showers and occasional heavy spells between August 18–22.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of K-P has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert, warning of possible flooding in northern glaciated areas such as Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Kohistan, and Swat. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel near water channels, streams, and landslide-prone roads.
🌊 Flooding & Landslide Threats
Heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods in hill torrents, urban flooding in low-lying cities, and landslides in hilly regions. Weak structures, electricity poles, and billboards are at risk of damage due to strong winds and lightning.
🆘 Safety Measures in Place
Authorities including the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and emergency services are on standby for road clearance and rescue operations. Citizens can report emergencies through PDMA’s helpline 1700.
📊 Rising Death Toll
Since late June, torrential rains have claimed 312 lives, including 142 children, and injured 740 people across Pakistan, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
